NCSEA Convening on Educator Shortage

May 13, 2021

Educator turnover has been on the rise since 2015, and communities with the greatest needs have
been hit the hardest. The pandemic has exacerbated this shortage. At the same time, enrollment in
teacher preparation programs is declining. What role can NCSEA affiliates and local affiliates play in

addressing these shortages?

To explore this question, NCSEA, in partnership with the NEA will hold several convenings. The first
convening will be a two-hour conversation, featuring the Educator Diversity Collective, which arose
from NEA 2019 NBI-17. Thirty passionate educators from 13 states have been exploring ways to
diversify the teaching profession and develop recruitment and retention strategies for the local
districts and schools. During this session, we will hear from members actively working on the issue
and collectively discuss ways state affiliate have been and could be supportive of similar efforts.

Because this meeting is using a virtual platform, NCSEA is opening this session to a broad audience.
State affiliates may invite whomever they wish to attend, including statewide officers, executive
directors, affiliate managers, and other affiliate staff.
